A few years ago, my mom gave me abook, Why I Live in Alabama: 101 Dang Good Reasons. I no longer live in Alabama (though there are some days I wish I did), but I do love Alabama.
I thought I'd share a couple of those 101 reasons today:
oh man, those little Dolly Madison pies (the ones with the Peanuts characters on the front you would get at the grocery) were the best! I loved apple and lemon. Those were some good fried pies.
T get serious for a minute, let's not forget some of the famous people from Alabama: sport's figures Hank Aaron, Satchel Paige, and Willie Mays; nationally famous educator Marva Collins; singers/musicians Nat "King" Cole, Lionel Ritchie, Emmy Lou Harris, Tammy Wynette, the country group Alabama, Hank Williams, assorted American Idol winners and contestants, and Heather Zempel's cousin Ray Sawyer, lead singer of the 70's group Dr. Hook and the Medicine Show; actors Jim Nabors and Courtney Cox; Broadway stars Nell Carter and Rebecca Luker; Harper Lee, author of "To Kill a Mockingbird"; and my personal favorite Helen Keller.
After working as an environmental engineer for a few years and a policy advisor on Capitol Hill for a few years, I finally landed as the Pastor of Discipleship at National Community Church in Washington, DC. I am originally from Mobile, Alabama, so I enjoy hot humid weather, football, and fried dill pickles. My Southern heritage also prompts me to throw moonpies to people during my talks at retreats and summits. I am married to the wonderful Ryan Zempel, who writes for a political website by day but sings and dances on the local community theatre stage at night. Check out my new small group curriculum, Sacred Roads.

Yes. Oh yes. And let's not forget the cherry and chocolate.

Yes, mom, you are right. I suppose I should make "Why I Love Alabama" a regular feature on this blog.
